Pathetic excuse for a training run!

All I can say about today is a rather angry and pissed off hmmmph! Why do I feel like that? Well, last week I managed my longest run ever of 11 miles and am really pleased with my overall progress. So, today, I decided I was going to try and do 12 as a 1 mile increase to my long run is sensible in my book. Set off and it was raining a little. Never mind, I thought. However, 1 mile in it absolutely pissed it down and then the hail came down. Everything I was wearing, including my boxers, was utterly soaked. So, in a miserable pissed off mood, I ended up walking home.

I will have another bash at it tomorrow. Only got 3 weeks to go until my 10k race which I'm looking forward to. Stats from the last few runs:

Been a while

As the title says it's been a while since I updated this blog. Also been a while since I last ran. So what's been happening? Well, last week I did my 3 midweek runs on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and on reflection I think I overdid it a little. I say that as I also decided to try and up my mileage, so instead of doing 4, 6, 4 I attempted to do 5, 7, 5. On Thursdays run with Colin I felt this burning pain down the outside of my knee and had to stop. Read up on this and it can indicate a cartilage tear but I've had no swelling since and just a slight stiffness. I think if it was a tear I'd be in a hell of a lot of pain. I think that I just overdid it all last week, plus it was about minus 3 so that could've had something to do with it :-).

Went out Saturday with all the intentions of attempting to do 10 miles plus, but it started chucking it down with snow, and the knee felt a bit stiff, so I stopped after 1.3 miles and went home. Pathetic, yes I know. I've had a good rest from running since then and have been doing some kettlebell cross training which has been going well.

Went out tonight and managed 5 miles and am out with Colin tomorrow, hopefully will do 8 miles and then I'll do a long run on Saturday.

Bit of a write off

As the title of this post suggests that is what this weekend has been. I usually manage to run 3 times in the week and twice at weekends, one of those runs being a recovery run. Managed to run Tuesday and Wednesday and noticed on Thursday that my hamstring felt a little tight so decided to cancel my Thursday evening run. I usually run Fridays but as I was going to see Thin Lizzy, who were totally immense, I was going to run Thursday instead. Never mind, I thought, the days rest will do me good. Anyway, went to the gig and had a great time but I got well and truly hammered. Was going to do my long run on Saturday but literally felt like crap all day so cancelled it. Managed to get out today though and did 3 miles. Ran at a nice steady pace and this was only 1 minute slower than my fastest time, I didn't really feel that I was pushing myself either so I'm really pleased with that. Back to it as of Tuesday.

Did my run today with my new toy. It's a Garmin Forerunner 110 watch which cost £100. Got sick of using my iphone to monitor my runs and running the battery down to virtually nothing. So I thought I'd invest in a gadget (I love gadgets, can't get enough if them). So far it appears to be amazing and gives you loads of stats to monitor your activities. It even allows you to upload your data to the logyourrun website which I'm kind of used to using and don't really want to part with. Stats from todays run:

Sunday 22nd January

Not much to report today except the stats from my two runs. Apart from losing my earphones and hat while out yesterday. Put them in the pocket of my running jacket and they fell out somewhere along my route. So annoying! Also hoping to break into the top 100 of the runners world north vs south January challenge. Basically, you run and then log your mileage on the site. I'm currently sitting at number 108 with 66.66 miles. The person at number 100 is on 71.60 miles so I shall keep plugging away. I am currently doing close on 25 miles per week so the top 100 is looking doable.

Friday 20 January 2012

Thank Crunchie It's Friday

Have done my usual 3 weekday runs this week but they haven't gone quite to plan. Was going to do a 4 miler, a 6 miler and another 4 miler. It all started last Saturday when we went out with my running mate Colin and his Fiance for our friend Lisa's Birthday drinks. Colin is very good at running distances - he's managed to do a 13 miler but I've always been slightly quicker than him over distance. Anyway, he was moaning about his speed and said that instead of running a long run on Sunday he was going to do 3 miles as fast as he could. Sunday, I received a text from him saying he'd done 3 miles in 19 minutes to which my reaction was something along the lines of "what the fuck?". So Tuesday night I went out and absolutely murdered myself at doing 3 miles as fast as I could - managed to do it in 25 and a half minutes, which is one minute and 24 seconds faster than my previous best, so I'm quite pleased with that. it's faster than Colin as he did a more accurate measurement and came in at something like 25 and a half mins for 2.9 miles.

Wednesday night I did my usual 6 miler with Colin but ran round by him which was a nice change. Arrived at his house and we set off. He asked me which way I wanted to go and as I don't know the area that well I suggested that he decide which way to run. He said to me "well, if we go that way it's uphill and if we go the other way it's downhill". "I'm not fussed, you decide", I said. "OK", said Colin and we set off in the uphill direction. Little did I realise that he meant most of the run was uphill. Was quite a good run in the end though anyway.

Tonight I planned on doing 4 miles but ended up doing 3 miles. Firstly, I decided to save my legs for my 10 miler tomorrow. and secondly I made the mistake of eating a couple of chicken wings before I went out which made me feel a little sluggish. My lovely wife has also bought me a kettle bell today which I am going to start using next week to build a bit of upper body strength. I'm also hoping that it's going to help me get rid of what is left of my belly. I've also finally booked my place in the Lichfield Half Marathon which is on May 6th. The only race I've ever run was a 5k in December dressed as Santa and now I'm in a further two - a 10k in March and the HM in May. Once the entries open for the Wolverhampton full Marathon I'll be entering that one too.

Sunday 15 January 2012

The week gone by

Feel like this weeks been a good week for running. Also stuck to not having any alcohol in the week which has made my runs feel better. Did have a couple on Friday which I don't think I'll bother doing again if I'm doing a long run the following day, as it made the early stages of the run feel a bit sluggish. So, I've done two 4 mile runs and a 6 miler with Colin in the week followed by my longest run ever yesterday.

The long run was tiring but fun. Original plan was to run from where I live to Birmingham which is roughly 11 miles, give or take half a mile, depending on which route you run. However, after some discussion I decided to do a different run, as, if I had run to Birmingham I'd have to have caught public transport back and thought I may seize up if I didn't stretch properly. I then decided to run to West Bromwich and back. Set off on the run and felt good, though still probably a bit too fast (must remember to slow down), and got to Wednesbury (about 3 miles in). You then have to go through a part of Wednesbury called Hill Top, and there is an obvious reason why it's called Hill Top. Its so bloody steep its unbelievable, I could feel the back of my calfs tugging and straining like mad. Anyway, I got about half way up Hill Top and thought sod this, turned round, ran down and went a different route to half way to Walsall instead.

So in the end the run ended up being 10 miles. Not quite the 11.5 I hoped for but hey ho it's still a massive achievement for me as it's the first time Ive ever run double figures. I now have a couple of goals that I want to achieve. One is to run either to or back from Birmingham, running back is probably more sensible so I can get showered after the run. The other one is to able to tackle the horrendous area that is Hill Top and run all the way up it. One day, in the next couple of months I will do this.

Also did a 2.5 mile recovery run today to stretch my tired muscles. Also just realised that the 10k race I entered is only 8 weeks away.

So, Ive been out for my Friday night run and as I got started I remember thinking how cold it was. Just looked at the Weather on my phone and it says on there that it's -3. I really didn't think it was that cold when I was running, though it's funny how you warm up when you do a bit of running :-).

I was thinking while I was out tonight (and I often think this) about how my life has changed so much for the better in the last few months. This time last year there was absolutely no way that I could've run for 4 miles without stopping, in fact I'd have struggled to have run 400 yards without stopping and collapsing. I seriously believe that giving up smoking has been the best thing I ever did (been 6 months now), apart from getting married to my gorgeous Wife of course.

So anyway, I'm just chilling out now with a beer (not gonna have too much tonight) before heading off to bed. Big day tomorrow.

The week ahead

For those of you that do not know me, I try to run 4 times per week. These days are Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday or Sunday. So this week I have an interesting week:

I intend to kick the booze in the week. Now, I wouldn't go as far as to say that I'm an alcoholic but I love a drink and I'm into metal and rock music in a massive way and for me its always kind of gone hand in hand. I've also had a week off work post Xmas where I've drank loads.

Secondly, I'm gonna go for my first double digit run on Saturday. I'm aiming to go from my house and run to Birmingham City centre which is about 11.5 miles. Figured that I've managed 8 so fuck it why not try for 11.5.

In between Im gonna do two 4 milers and a 5 miler on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.
So we shall see. I will update this blog accordingly. I would also like to state that I refuse to ever let anything beat me so bring it the fuck on!

First post

Hi Everyone,

Well this is my first post on my new blog. So why create a blog? Well, I'm pretty new to running (been doing it since October 2011) and before that I'd done no exercise since school 20 + years ago. Im 38 now and thought that if I kept a blog it would help keep me motivated.

So why did I decide to get into running? Well, last year I agreed to do a charity cricket match through work (we support Breakthrough for Breast Cancer). Anyway, did the match and I felt absolutely knackered after it, all I did was run around a bit after doing some batting and I remember seizing up in the car, definitely not good! So after that I took a long hard look at myself and realised that I wanted to live past the age of 50 and not die of some horrible illness. So I bought myself a pair of running shoes and got into running, I absolutely love the buzz of doing it.

I started off with a run/walk program and got myself up to doing 3 miles continuously after about 6 weeks. Today I ran for 8 miles without stopping (except for crossing roads). Anyway, Ive made the decision to enter the Wolverhampton Marathon in September and figured out that a blog would help my training and hopefully prevent me from slacking if I publish what I am doing training wise.
